Reacton Wind Turbine Fire Protection
Automatic Reacton clean agent fire suppression for wind turbine nacelle electrical cabinets and yaw/pitch systems.
Worldwide carbon reduction is a key focus today, and wind energy investment and installations continue to grow rapidly. As reliance on these remote and expensive turbines increases, so does the requirement for reliable, robust, fully automatic fire suppression. In each turbine nacelle, a host of systems must work in harsh and remote conditions without fail - from electrical control cabinets to the yaw and pitch motors - and fire is a real threat. Traditional fire protection solutions often need too much space, are too heavy, or rely on detection methods unsuited to this environment.
APPLICATIONS AND RISK AREAS: • Electrical system failures - extremely common, potential to rapidly spread • Friction from fatigued parts - causes overheating that leads to fire • Lightning strikes - unpredictable, cannot be prevented • Hydraulic oil leaks - increase fire severity due to the presence of oil • Poor maintenance - a preventable fire will still spread to surrounding components
HOW THE REACTON SYSTEM WORKS: Reacton's UL-approved pneumatic detection tube bursts when fire is detected, activating the system. The clean agent is released through discharge hoses and nozzles to combat the fire rapidly and effectively, preventing reignition. Wind turbine protection uses a range of specialist agents including 3M™ Novec™ 1230 and FM-200™, both providing rapid knockdown in the enclosed spaces typical of a nacelle. 3M™ Novec™ 1230 is an environmentally friendly clean agent that leaves no residue, providing zero clean-up with excellent extinguishing capabilities.
ADVANTAGES OF A REACTON SYSTEM: • Fully automatic - detects and activates without any external power source • Rapid detection and immediate agent delivery, typically in under 10 seconds • 24/7 protection with zero false alarms • Extremely low maintenance • 10-year service life, 3-year warranty on all parts • Compact and lightweight, simple to install • Suitable for both new-build (OEM) and retrofit installations
APPROVALS: • UL Listed - detection tube as a Heat-Automatic Fire Detector component (S36434)
